Anderson Qualifies Tenth, Gets Set for Intramural Tussle in Topeka

The second day of qualifying for the O'Reilly Summer Nationals proved to be rather anticlimactic, as the combination of 80 degree temperatures and a 30-mph head wind precluded any shuffling among the Top Twelve Pro Stock qualifiers from Friday. As a result, Greg Anderson and his Summit Racing team used their final two attempts at Heartland Park Topeka to fine-tune their set-up for Sunday's final eliminations.

Although the four-time Topeka winner was able to make a pair of representative runs, his 6.685-second time from Friday remained his run of record, earning him the tenth starting position and a first-round encounter against his teammate Jason Line. Ironically, it was Line's final qualifying run which provided Anderson with some positive feedback as the KB Racing crew looked to regain the handle on their race cars.

"I believe we took a step in the right direction today with Jason's Summit Racing Pontiac," said Anderson. "Obviously we need to see if we can expand on it tomorrow, and apply it to both cars. We're actually not making bad runs, but for some reason our engines are just not performing as well as we'd like them to in these conditions. We're still a little puzzled and are only about halfway back to where we belong, but we think we learned something on that last run, and we're going to go with it.

"The bad news is that we run each other first round, so one of us will be done early. However, one of us will also advance, which is good news. We're going to lock horns tomorrow, and do what we can to make these cars better, giving ourselves a chance to go beyond the second round. With the way the pairings worked out, it's all we can do."
