Goodyear Drag Racers Notch 54th Final Round Win of NHRA Season
National Hot Rod Association: Goodyear tires helped pave the way for six of the 12 winners in the Advanced Auto Parts Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka in Topeka, Kan. The powerful performance brings Goodyear's season total to an industry-leading 54 final round wins.
Mike Dunn and Tony Pedregon exhibited some serious speed. Dunn triggered his Top Fuel car to a stunning run lasting just 4.495 seconds. Dunn was clocked at 331.53 mph. Pedregon turned the fastest pass in Funny Car history in qualifying with a 324.83 mph run. The record did not stand because Pedregon was unable to back it up within one percent on his next pass.
Pedregon did win the Funny Car finals though, beating his boss, John Force.
Kenny Bernstein beat Larry Dixon in the Top Fuel finals. It was the 56th career victory for Bernstein and it gave him the lead in the championship standings.
Brandon Bernstein, Kenny's son, nearly gave the family a perfect day when he advanced to the finals in Federal Mogul Dragster competition before falling to Shelly Howard. Both Bernsteins race on Goodyear tires.
Don Smith won his first national finals race when he knocked off Randy Daniels in the Pro Stock Truck final. Ron Krisher beat Mark Pawuk to win the Pro Stock final.
David Rampy won the Competition Eliminator final and Dave Dahlem won in Super Comp.
It was a good weekend for the Goodyear D0622 development tire. The tire, designed for use in the Federal Mogul Funny Car division, did the groundwork for Vern Moats' car. Moats made it all the way to the finals before losing to Jay Payne. It was the first competitive action for the D0622.
