CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES PARTS AMERICA NATIONALS -- RAIN DATE NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES HEARTLAND PARK TOPEKA (Kansas) SATURDAY, OCT. 17, 1998
FUNNY CAR -- CAMARO Z28
CHUCK ETCHELLS, KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, lost to a holeshot advantage by one thousandth of a second to RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, in the semifinal (5.031/305.81 for Capps, 5.013/306.95 for Etchells).
ETCHELLS: "I didn't see him when we left the starting line. At about 100 feet out I got a glimpse of his car in the corner of my eye. At half track I still saw him. At about 800 feet I didn't see him. At 1000 feet I didn't see him, and at the lights I looked and I didn't see him. I started to smile and thought, 'Man, I got him.' Then I saw his win light on the left hand of the wall, and I was shocked. I have never been in a race when one thousandth of a second decided it. The closest I was in was four or five thousandths of a second. I never heard of (a margin of victory of) a thousandth in a Funny Car. It must have been exciting from the outside."
SO THE RIGHT LANE WAS O.K.?: "This Camaro wasn't even trying to turn a tire at all. It tried to move around a little bit, but it wasn't bad. I don't think lane choice means a whole lot right now. I think it did in the first round, but after that I think it's leveled off. The Kendall Camaro is running real good, it's strong, we picked up one round on (John) Force (for the championship), but we needed to pick up two or three."
ON HOW WELL THE CAMARO IS WORKING: "The Camaro seems to be back to where it was when we pulled into Denver. The car just wasn't there for six races. It's going good, going where you put it, I'm getting my confidence back."
ARE YOU GLAD FORCE WENT OUT IN THE FIRST ROUND?: :"Yes. It's going to tighten up the points. Ron (Capps) is getting closer to John. We probably moved 25 points closer because of qualifying and going to the final round. We're probably eight rounds away from Force. With three races left we have to pick up a lot."
