TOPEKA, KS (Sept. 29) - With the first day of qualifying complete at the 12th Annual Advance Auto Parts Nationals, Larry Dixon posted a time of 4.643 seconds at 306.95 mph Friday night to position the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster in the No. 5 spot at Heartland Park Topeka.

Dixon began his ninth career race at Topeka with an opening lap of 4.735 seconds at 305.01 mph while in the right lane of the newly re-paved quarter mile track. The pass was good enough to hold the No. 4 spot half way through the session before winding up No. 6 at the end of the first top fuel gathering.

Miller Lite Crew Chief Dick LaHaie, who has two wins at Topeka as a tuner (1993, 95) and one as a driver (1989), used his experience to pick up almost a full tenth of a second in the evening session with a time of 4.643 seconds at 306.95 mph. The elapsed time was the second-best of Dixon's career at Topeka and found him on the pole midway through the evening session before Gary Scelzi's lap of 4.604 seconds at 309.98 took over the No. 1 spot.

"We were able to go out today and qualify solidly in the top half of the field and get some good numbers that will hopefully help us on race day," said Dixon. "Now we'll come out tomorrow and see if we can't pick it up a little."

The Indianapolis-based driver's career-best qualifying effort at Topeka was a No. 2 seeding in 1995 where he posted a second round finish to Mike Dunn. The Miller Lite/Raybestos pilot enters this weekend's race ranked No. 3 in the Winston Top Fuel points race, just 136 points behind leader Scelzi. Dixon entered last year's event at H.P.T. sitting eighth in the points race and 144 points out of first.

The final two qualifying sessions will resume Saturday and are scheduled for Noon and 4 PM CT. Sunday's actions starts at 10 AM and will be televised by TNN at 4:30 PM ET.
