TOPEKA, Kan- Defending NHRA Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells made it to the semifinals of this weekend's Division 5 opener at Heartland Park, Topeka, Kansas. Wells defeated Bob McCosh in the first round before losing to eventual winner and low qualifier Bruce Bowler in the semi's. Bowler ran a 5.63 to put away Wells when his Plain Vanilla/Blue Bunny Ice Cream entry went into heavy tireshake and was forced to shut off.

"It just got out there and got up on the tire pretty quick, then just kind of fell off the tire when I hit second [gear]," explained Wells. "The track was pretty good, and I think it grabbed the tire too hard, then it was pretty much over from there. I stayed in it just in case something was to happen to him, but he ended up taking the win."

The next race for the Plain Vanilla team will be Castrol Nationals presented by O'Reilly at the Texas Motorplex near Dallas, Texas, where Wells hopes to overcome his tireshake problems.

Wells said, "On the last pass it looked like it was down on power, and we think that the power will go up some in Dallas just because of the change in altitude. Were thinking the car should straighten itself out because of that in Dallas."
