TOPEKA, Kan. - Just one week after picking up his first win of the year, former Division 5 Champion David Wells hopes to get his second at this weekend's NHRA Division 5 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series opener at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan. Last weekend, Wells won the Division 3 opener at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago, and will be looking to extend his early Division 5 points lead this weekend.

Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, feels that he has most of the 'bugs' worked out of some of his newer parts they have tried for this season, and is looking forward to returning to Heartland Park Topeka. He also wants to win the race to keep his momentum up going into the Division 5 season.

"The early races we have ran this year were just to get ready for Division 5," said Wells. "I think we pretty well got a handle on the car now, so its just a matter of keeping it going like that."

At Wells' last outing at Heartland Park Topeka, last year's Advance Auto Parts Nationals, Wells dipped down into the 5.40's. The Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" entry has run as quick as a 5.38 last year, and Wells feels if the conditions are right, he might be able to duplicate that performance in Topeka.

"We should be able to run 5.40's real easy, unless the weather or track gets bad," stated Wells. "Hopefully if everything goes right, we can get back into the 5.30's."

Wells also looks for it to be a tough fight with the Defending Division 5 Champion Bruce Bowler to regain the Division 5 throne.

"Bruce is a tough guy," commented Wells. "They have a pretty good handle on that A/Fuel deal. It will be between them, and somebody else might step up this year, too. Billy [Bybee] is running Division 2 this year, so he's not really in the picture anymore. It's going to be a tough year as usual."

Qualifying begins at 4 p.m. on Friday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters. They will have two more qualifying sessions on Saturday, with final eliminations concluding the event on Sunday.
