Wells to start title defense in Topeka.
TOPEKA, Kan. - Three-time defending NHRA Division 5 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion David Wells will start his defense of that title during this weekend's Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan. With a strong showing this weekend, Wells hopes to start a run to a fourth Division 5 Championship.
Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, attended last weekend's Division 3 opener in Joliet, Ill., hoping to gather information on a new engine combination he is trying. Despite only getting to make one run due to inclement weather, Wells feels the run was a step in the right direction.
"We're just going to try to keep moving forward," said Wells. "Even though we only got one run, it was pretty promising, it went 5.53 at 259 mph. That's one of the things we haven't had is any power on the top end, so obviously, we have that going the right way. We're going to keep moving the dials around and see if we can't get it to run faster."
Despite having many passes down the Heartland Park Topeka racing surface, Wells cites that with his new combination, there isn't much 'old' data to look back on.
"You can kind of go after the clutch set up," explained Wells. "You can do that, because you tune it to how the track reacts. As far as the motor, you have to make it happy, if we we're running our old deal, we could go back to old data, but with all the new stuff on the motor, it's kind of a shot in the dark. That's why we need tune-up runs."
Qualifying begins on Friday at 4 p.m. for the Top Alcohol Dragsters, followed by two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
