MCCLENATHAN SETTLES FOR NO. 7 IN TOPEKA QUALIFYING

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 22, 2010) - After earning three No. 1s and top-five starting spots in each of the eight races so far in the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Cory McClenathan will start Sunday’s eliminations from his lowest qualifying position of the season today at the 22nd annual NHRA Summer Nationals, in seventh.

McClenathan posted his quickest pass of 3.904 seconds at 312.13 mph in Friday night's cooler session, following an 8.906/74.87 in the opening round. Today's two tries under 85-degree ambient temperatures, winds reaching 38 mph, and a track surface registering 115 degrees, McClenathan's best efforts resulted in a 4.033/294.11 and a 4.012/287.78.

"We've just struggled for whatever reason, I don't know," said McClenathan, who's been low qualifier at Heartland Park four times in the past and event champion twice. "We're just not running the kind of numbers we normally do. The FRAM guys are doing all their usual great work, which is what they normally do. We have to find the problem. Something here has kind of got us backed up.

"So, we keep backing up to try to work with the weather, and then the wind conditions were definitely making things a little bit tougher. All that does is create more downforce on the race car, so, if anything, the wind is helping us."

McClenathan faces No. 10 qualifier Morgan Lucas in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations.
