Bruce Litton Scores Huge First Round Victory; Concludes Topeka Outing With Quarter-final Finish
TOPEKA, Kan. - Sometimes when you go to the starting line and give it your best shot against a favored opponent, the cards will stack up in your favor. Indianapolis-based Top Fuel driver Bruce Litton found that out as he launched a stone in the first round that sent a giant reeling during the NHRA Advance Auto Parts Nationals in Topeka, Kan. The Wix Filters-sponsored driver went on to record a quarterfinal finish, which effectively guaranteed that the event was a successful venture for the enclosed trailer dealership owner.
Litton gives thanks to the responsible parties that enabled him to enjoy a prosperous weekend.
"First and foremost, I'd like to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for enabling us to be out here doing this wonderful sport called drag racing," explained Litton, who will participate in the IHRA Mopar Parts Canadian Nationals in Grand Bend, Ontario. "My crew worked their tails off to give me an excellent car. I would say that this weekend has been a positive success. We got off to a slow start, but we came roaring through in the end."
Litton entered final eliminations as the ninth quickest qualifier with a 4.742, 292.46 best.
Paired against former NHRA Winston Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher, Litton gave it his best shot and emerged victorious. Armed with a .034 starting line advantage, Litton never looked back en-route to a 4.772, 307.16 victory. Schumacher had his own set of problems as he went up in smoke about 200-feet off of the line and slowed to a 5.300, 214.35.
His victory paired him alongside the low qualifier Mike Dunn in the second round. Dunn edged out the starting line battle by .001, but drove away from a respectable effort from Litton. The Wix Filters team concluded their weekend with a 4.884, 283.79.
The impressive part of Litton's performances is that he was running the very-limiting IHRA set-up, which limits blower overdrive percentage. In NHRA competition, there are no such limitations. He has reached the second round on two occasions despite being at a disadvantage.
