ANTRON BROWN EARNS SECOND STRAIGHT NO. 1 QUALIFYING AWARD AT TOPEKA AND THIRD POLE OF 2010 SEASON
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 22, 2010) - Antron Brown earned his third No. 1 qualifying award of the 2010 season Saturday afternoon at Heartland Park Topeka. It is the second straight year that Brown has paced the Top Fuel field at the Topeka event. The former college track star carded his 24th career pole on the heels of his track-record elapsed time of 3.785-seconds on Friday evening at the O'Reilly Summer Nationals.
A day after setting both the track elapsed time and speed records at Heartland Park with a Friday evening blast of 3.785 seconds at 321.96 mph, the 24-time NHRA winner used a consistent tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to march the Matco Tools/U.S. Army rail to a lap of 3.953 seconds at 305.49 mph in the heat of the day while facing a strong head wind. Brown's bright blue Matco-backed rail spun the tires on its final qualifying effort and slowed to a lap of 4.197 at 222.29 as the 24-time NHRA winner remained atop the Top Fuel order. Brown now has an average qualifying position of 5.4 in nine races this season and has never qualified lower than fourth in three tries at the Topeka track. Brown's DSR and U.S. Army Racing teammate Tony Schumacher qualified fifth at 3.896-seconds.
"Our Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster is running awesome this weekend here at Topeka," Brown said. "It spun the tires on that last run, but we've run great all weekend long. We were trying to run a high 3.80 on that last pass, but the track just wouldn't hold it. It's all good though. We ran great on Friday and made a good run on today's first pass, so we have a really good hot rod for race day. I just wish we could run first round now on Saturday."
Brown will face off against No. 16 qualifier Luigi Novelli in the opening round of eliminations at Heartland Park at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday. Brown is 1-0 in his only meeting against Novelli. The 16-time Pro Stock Motorcycle winner has 319 career round wins and 98 in Top Fuel.
