Team Mopar Driver Johnson Reaches Second Final Round of the Season at Topeka
Allen Johnson proved that his NHRA Pro Stock Mopar Dodge Avenger is gaining ground in the performance department on points leader Mike Edwards' car, as the Team Mopar driver qualified No. 2 and then drove to a runner-up finish at the 22nd annual NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka on Sunday, May 23.
Johnson used Mopar HEMI-power to overcome Greg Stanfield's .001 reaction time off the starting line (.000 is perfect) with a 6.709-second elapsed time at 205.54 mph to claim the first-round win. The Team Mopar veteran then defeated Greg Anderson in the quarterfinals with a 6.703/205.66 pass, the quickest of the round. In the semifinals, Johnson dispatched of young Rickie Jones, known for being a quick draw off the line, with a .015 reaction time to Jones' .027, coupled with a 6.708/205.63 run, the best of the round.
Johnson drew No. 1 Qualifier Edwards in the final. Once again Johnson's Mopar Dodge was quickest and fastest, with a 6.710/205.19 pass to Edwards' 6.717/204.63, but Edwards slim advantage off the starting line (a .016 reaction time to Johnson's solid .026) was enough to keep AJ out of the winner's circle.
"We were very happy with the Mopar Dodge, its performance and our Mopar HEMI engine," said Johnson, who also earned a runner-up finish at the NHRA Houston event in April. "We couldn't have had a better weekend, aside from winning the race. We've got the Mopar Dodge Avenger running real good, we've got a big window on the car and we're making tons of horsepower. Things are looking good."
V. Gaines also enjoyed a fine weekend at Topeka, qualifying No. 5 in his Mopar-powered Dodge Avenger and advancing to the quarterfinals, where the Denver, Colo. native fell to Ron Krisher. Johnson is currently second in the NHRA Pro Stock standings, with Gaines in the No. 15 spot.
Next up for the Mopar-powered Pro Stockers is the 13th annual Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Joliet, Ill., June 4-6.
