SCHUMACHER NOMINATED FOR ESPY BEST DRIVER AWARD
CHICAGO, Ill., July 2 - For the second straight year, U.S. Army Top Fuel driver, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, has been nominated for the ESPY Best Driver Award.
The ESPY Awards, which are distributed for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly, was created by ESPN in 1993. Fans determine the winners in all categories (except the Arthur Ashe Courage Award and other special awards) by voting online at www.espys.tv. Voting will take place through July 12.
The 16th annual ESPYs will be hosted by Justin Timberlake on Wednesday, July 16, at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. The awards show will be televised by ESPN on Sunday, July 20, at 9 p.m. ET.
"Yet again, I'm excited that I'm being considered for such a prestigious award," said Schumacher, who is a five-time NHRA POWERade world champion. "Hopefully, this time around, I can bring home an ESPY for our Soldiers. Without their hard work and sacrifice each day, we're not enjoying these events."
Joining the Chicago-area resident on the ESPY Best Driver ballot are NASCAR drivers Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch and Dario Franchitti (formerly IRL); IRL pilot Scott Dixon; and Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton.
"That's a pretty stout group of guys," added Schumacher. "I'm honored to be included in such a select circle."
No drag racer has ever won the ESPY Best Driver Award. Aside from Schumacher, other NHRA drivers to be nominated over the years included John Force, Tony Pedregon, Greg Anderson and Melanie Troxel.
"We have to break the ice sooner or later," offered Schumacher. "Maybe, this will be the year."
Having won four consecutive world titles, Schumacher presently holds a 253- point lead in the Top Fuel standings halfway through the 2008 season. He's been on top of the points since the season opener in February.
Additionally, with five wins to his credit in '08, Schumacher has already clinched a spot in the Countdown to One phase of the NHRA's Countdown to the Championship. The playoffs, which cover the last six races of the season, begin in Charlotte, N.C. the weekend of September 11-14.
