Park Ridge, IL (April 11): After rolling the dice and coming up short at the inaugural Las Vegas race last weekend, Tony Schumacher and Team Exide look to rebound at the O'Reilly Nationals at Houston Raceway Park, April 14-16.
Even after a disappointing second round loss to Kenny Bernstein, Schumacher was able to maintain a nine point lead over Gary Scelzi as they battle for the 2000 Winston Championship.
"We still have the lead," said Schumacher, "but we can't afford to make any more mistakes like that if we want to be in contention at the end of the season. The points are just too valuable."
One year ago, at this same Houston race, Schumacher's Exide dragster was clearly the class of the field as each pass they made was as consistent as the previous. They ran their way to the finals, only to smoke the tires against Doug Herbert. This year, Team Exide will again look to their crew chief, Dan Olson, to show just how strong his combination is on the Raceway Park quarter mile.
"Dan (Olson) really knows how to make horsepower at the Texas tracks," said Schumacher, "I always look forward to those rides and hope to get another chance to pick up a win in Houston."
When asked about the incident last week with Tim Gibson's disqualification against Schumacher in the first round of eliminations, Schumacher commented, "We have one guy whose primary responsibility is fuel percentage, as do most teams."
'It's one of those things that we really need to stay on top of at all times, since it's mixed by hand and many factors can change the percentage."
"As far as us getting the win; it's an NHRA rule and that's that. We all have to live by it."
Qualifying is scheduled for Friday, April 14, and Saturday, April 15. Final Eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, April 16 at 11:00am.
