NHRA Funny Car Champion Tony Pedregon Nominated For 2004 ESPY Best Driver Award

GLENDORA, Calif. (June 23, 2004) - Defending NHRA POWERade Series Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon has been nominated in the Best Driver category for the 2004 ESPY Awards, it was announced recently.

Pedregon, a second-generation racer from Chino Hills, Calif., was nominated alongside '03 IRL champion Scott Dixon, six-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher and NASCAR drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth.

Pedregon raced to eight victories and eight No. 1 qualifying awards last season to claim his first NHRA Funny Car championship, ending John Force's unprecedented streak of 10 consecutive championship titles.

Pedregon is the second NHRA driver to be nominated for the ESPY Awards. Force, the team owner of the car Pedregon drove to his championship, was nominated for the ESPY Best Driver award in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

"It's a tribute to the sport of NHRA Drag Racing to be recognized once again at the ESPY Awards," Pedregon said. "To be nominated also is a tribute to the team that I won the championship with last year. It's a season that I'll never forget. We won the first six of 11 races and really had an impressive year. I feel very honored to be included among this impressive group of drivers representing NHRA and the Funny Car category for the 2004 ESPY Best Driver award."

Sports fans can vote for their favorite driver and other sports heroes in 34 different categories at www.espn.com/espy2004 through July 9.

The ESPY Awards - for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly - sets the stage for the sports world to celebrate the year's achievements, relive memorable moments and salute the best performers and performances.

Winners are selected by the ESPY Awards Academy, which includes Hall of Fame athletes and coaches as well as nationally recognized print and broadcast sports journalists representing every major media outlet.

Past ESPY Best Driver winners include stock car racers Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Bobby Labonte and Dale Jarrett, and open wheel drivers Jimmy Vasser, Al Unser, Jr., Nigel Mansell and Schumacher. The ESPY's have been presented annually since 1993.

The ESPY Best Driver award winner will be revealed at the spectacular Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on July 14 when ESPN presents the 2004 Espy Awards. The show will be televised on ESPN on July 18 at 9 p.m. (ET).
