CHANDLER, Ariz. (Jan. 30, 2005) -- After two days of tinkering with the tune-up on Don Prudhomme's Skoal RacingSM Funny Car, Tommy Johnson Jr. powered to his quickest pass of the weekend Sunday at the National Time Trials at Firebird International Raceway.

The five-time NHRA winner made two squirts to open Sunday's testing action before using a tune-up from veteran crew chief Mike Green to record a pass of 4.835 seconds at 310.98 mph. Johnson shut off before the 1,320-foot finish line on the run.

"We're not as happy as we'd like to be, but we're finding a few things that might have plagued us during the season," Johnson said. "The early numbers on the first run were real close to being a low 4.7-second pass. With a couple of more days of testing, we should be able to work out the bugs and be running right with the rest of the competition."

Johnson and is Skoal Racing crew will resume testing on Monday at the Arizona drag strip in preparation for the season-opening Winternationals, Feb. 10-13, at historic Pomona (Calif.) Raceway. Johnson qualified No. 1 at the Winternationals in 2001.
