Johnson Jr. Powers to 4.79-Second Pass Monday at Phoenix

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Jan. 31, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. and the Don Prudhomme-owned Skoal Racing Funny Car continued to progress in preseason testing Monday at Firebird International Raceway as the five-time NHRA winner clocked his quickest run of the National Time Trials.

After battling a tricky race track and tire-shake issues, Johnson made a clean half-track pass on Monday's second run before the veteran driver blasted his Chevy flopper to a run of 4.795 seconds at 322.73 mph. The run bettered the 4.835-second pass that Johnson posted on Sunday afternoon.

"It's nice to know that we had a problem and the crew was able to find it and go out and get the car where we knew it would run," Johnson said. "I'm real glad we got the problem solved, now we can go back out there tomorrow and continue to progress with our tune-up. That's what testing is all about."

Johnson and the Skoal Racing team will return to F.I.R. on Tuesday to resume preparation for the 2005 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season which begins Feb. 10-13 in Pomona, Calif.
