JOHNSON JR. CONCLUDES FIRST TEST OF '06 SEASON
LAS VEGAS (Jan. 24, 2006) Tommy Johnson Jr. and Don Prudhomme's Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car team! wrapped up their opening test session of the 2006 NHRA season Tuesday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway making one final half-track pass at the Nitro Blast Off.
The six-time NHRA winner and one of 13 drivers to have earned victories in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories posted a testing-best run of 4.757 seconds at 326.63 mph on the only full, quarter mile pass he made during the five-day test. The Skoal Racing team made nine attempts over the course of the first Las Vegas test.
"Everything went according to plan," Johnson said. "We weren't going to try and run low E.T. of the world. The plan was to make the tune-up work well and to make sure we can run good, consistent numbers. With our basic tune-up, we went down the track on every run. We've got a solid, consistent race car. It's easier to make the car go quicker when you have a car that goes down the track all the time.
"Now, we'll be ready to make full runs at Phoenix. We only made one full pass at Vegas and that was the plan. It was a nice run, the 4.75 at 326. Now, we're ready to try and work on full passes. I'm looking forward to seeing how we adapt to the track conditions at Phoenix."
The Skoal Racing team will continue its preparation for the 2006 NHRA season at the National Time Trials, January 27-30, at Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix. The 2006 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series kicks-off Feb. 9-12 at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona (Calif.) with the 46th annual Winternationals. Johnson is the defending event champion of the storied season-opening race.
