JOHNSON JR. DRIVES SKOAL RACINGSM FLOPPER TO 4.83-SECOND RUN TO OPEN INDY TEST
CLERMONT, Ind. (Aug. 23, 2005) Veteran nitromethane pilot Tommy Johnson Jr. made two passes behind the wheel of his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car Tuesday at Indianapolis Raceway Park as the six-time NHRA winner began preparing for the! 51st running of the prestigious Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.
After the Skoal Racing crew spent a good portion of the day servicing the race car following a semifinal finish last weekend at the NHRA event in Memphis, Tenn., Johnson's Monte Carlo shook the tires on its first attempt and coasted to a run of 8.531 seconds at 93.61 mph. The Iowa native then posted a run of 4.835 at 323.04 to conclude the first day of testing for the Skoal Racing team.
"That was a good baseline run for us," Johnson said. "The track was very tricky early and most teams struggled to get down. Later in the day, the track started coming around and that run should help us for tomorrow. A 4.83 at 323 is a nice solid run."
Johnson and Don Prudhomme's Skoal Racing team will continue its preparation for drag racing's Super Bowl event, Aug. 31-Sept. 5, at I.R.P. The team will compete for a $100,000 bonus in the Skoal Showdown on Sunday, Sept. 4, before final eliminations are staged on Monday, Sept. 5.
