COMPTON ELECTED TO NHRA BOARD, PROMOTED TO NEW POSITION
GLENDORA, Calif. -- Tom Compton was elected to the NHRA board of directors and promoted to the newly-created position of executive vice president and general manager, NHRA Chairman of the Board and Founder Wally Parks announced June 4. In his new role, Compton will be responsible for the NHRA race operations group, publications, NHRA-owned and operated racetracks, facilities development, national event business, human resources, and all administrative and fiscal functions. The marketing and sales, broadcasting and communications departments will continue to report to NHRA President Dallas Gardner. "I'm very pleased the board has shown this level of confidence in me," Compton said. "To be elected as a member of the NHRA board is a wonderful honor and opportunity. I am truly looking forward to my expanded involvement in positioning the NHRA for even greater success in the future. "The key is for us to achieve that success without losing sight of our roots -- where we came from and why we're here. I'm confident that we can." Compton, 39, joined NHRA in 1993 as vice president and chief financial officer. He was promoted to senior vice president in 1996. "Tom has a concise understanding of the principles on which NHRA was formed and for its responsibility as primary guardian of the sport of drag racing," Parks said. "He is familiar with the needs and values of our participating sponsors' programs as well as the fundamental role NHRA shares with its track operators and the racing fraternity to ensure the sport's continuing progress. "There is no area of our business in which Tom has not been involved, and we are confident that his new position will add long- range stability to the organization's administrative structure." Compton joins Chairman Parks, Vice Chairman Harvey Palash, Dick Wells and Gardner as directors on the NHRA board. "The growth of NHRA over the past five years has dictated the need for an expanded top management structure," Gardner said. "The increasing demands of running the organization require skills and experience to position the NHRA for the future. We are fortunate to have someone of Tom's background and ability as part of the team to help guide NHRA into the next century. "Motorsports will continue to see unprecedented growth in the upcoming years, and it's critical that NHRA be positioned to not only capitalize on opportunities but to ensure that we capably manage the growth. As NHRA continues its growth, it has become apparent that my position as president needed to free itself of much of the day-to-day management duties. My efforts now will be concentrated almost exclusively on the marketing of our sport and the critical component of television coverage." Compton and his wife, Kathy, live in Redondo Beach, Calif. They have two children, Nicole, 3, and Rachel, 1. -30- 6/4/97-GR25-083
