NHRA drag racers head to the Texas Motorplex next weekend (October 16-19) for the 12th Annual Revell Nationals where a record purse of $1,604,500 will be awarded. John Force will be looking to clinch the 1997 Funny Car championship while Jim Yates looks to secure the Pro Stock championship. Yates has only to win two rounds to clinch the championship no matter how Warren Johnson finishes.

Kenny Bernstein's championship hopes have faded but with the right weather Bernstein hopes to knock down the 320 MPH barrier in his Budweiser Top Fueler. Bernstein says that there are three cars capable of running 320 MPH, "the McDonalds car, Amato and our car."

"We're shooting for 320" Bernstein said, "we want to win races but we want to go 320. If the conditions are right, 320 will fall during the next two races."

Texas Motorplex is the world's only all concrete drag strip. The track has seen its share of records including the first four second run in NHRA history. Eddie Hill was the first person to run in the four second range when he ran a 4.998 in 1988.

Cruz Pedregon returns in the McDonalds Funny Car after bursting into flames in the final round at Memphis against John Force. "We were going for it," Pedregon said, "we hadn't won a race in a year and a half and we were pushing it."

Cruz's Funny Car burst into flames at half distance when "we spit some oil on the engine". Pedregon was taken to the hospital with burns on his finger.

When asked about his recent emergency appendectomy, Cruz said his stomach was fine. "I'm still nursing the finger, but I'll be 100% for Dallas".

After the Revell Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, the 1997 NHRA championship tour continues in Texas with the Matco Tools Supernationals at Houston Raceway Park on October 23-26. The last race of the season, the Winston Finals, will be held November 6-9, 1997 at Pomona.
