READING, PA (Sept. 19) -- Today in the first round of the of eliminations at the 15Th Annual True Value Keystone Nationals Eddie Hill, driver of the Pennzoil Top Fuel Dragster, was defeated in eliminations by less than one thousandth of a second. In a tire smoking battle with Tim Gibson, Hill ran 5.563 / 242.58 to Gibson's 5.655 / 246.44 to end in a dead heat that had to be decided to the 4th decimal place.
"When you lose in a dead heat, it just goes to show you what kind of luck we have been having." Said Hill, "We can't seem to get a break. The car is running good, now we just need a little old fashioned racing luck."
Mike Thomas, driver of the Pennzoil Pro Stock Pontiac Firebird fought handling problems with his car all weekend. In an eleventh hour qualifying effort Thomas put his car into the 15th position. Although he would be defeated by Kurt Johnson, with a 6.938 / 198.19 to Johnson's 6.942 / 199.42, in the 1st round of eliminations. Thomas is happy with his performance.
"We struggled with car problems all week end," said Thomas. "We feel fortunate to have gotten them straightened out in time to get qualified. We still have some bugs to work out, but we will be ready for Topeka.
This weekend Bruce Allen and The Outlaw Fuel Additives team, from a qualifying point of view, had a successful weekend. Allen's qualifying effort netted him the number 4 position and a membership in the prestigious Speed Pro 200 Mile-Per-Hour Club, when he ran a 6.905 / 200.17 in the third session. Richie Stevens however would defeat Allen in round 1 when his car shook violently and came out of gear.
"We got bit here, but it's not the end of the world. I'm not unhappy. The car has run good this weekend; our performance has come around. We just need to keep making little steps and we will get to the winners circle."
Team Pennzoil now looks towards the next stop on the NHRA tour in Topeka, KS for the 11th Annual Advance Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, Sept. 30 through Oct. 3.
