Branch shooting to rebound in Atlanta
COMMERCE, Ga. - After redlighting at his last race, defending three-time NHRA Division 4 Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion Tate Branch is ready to hit the track during this upcoming weekend's Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. Despite having one of the top Funny Cars in the country, the Bar's Leaks/Branch-Etterman Racing team has yet to find that elusive first national event win.
Branch, from Artesia, N.M., feels that the three weeks he's had off have been far to long to think about the last outing.
"Man, this three weeks off has killed us," said Branch. "I guess that just goes to show how good the chemistry is on this team; everybody is just chomping at the bit to get back out to the track. I really hated to go out there and redlight in Houston, so I'm ready to get back there and get that monkey off my back. The car is running good, and we've always liked running Atlanta, so hopefully we can get our first win this weekend."
The team hasn't exactly laid dormant during their three week break.
"My Crew Chief Dave [Scheelk] spent a weekend with George up in Michigan with the car just going over things to see if he could find any problems or make something better," explained Branch. "You never can spend enough time on these cars. It's a combination of that, and plus, I know I keep saying this, but we're just so excited about this year, we can't help but go tinker with the car. We just want to give maximum effort to put this Bar's Leaks car on top."
Qualifying will start on Friday for the alcohol cars. Saturday will feature one final qualifying session and round one of eliminations that evening. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
