Wilson dominates en route to Stanton win.
STANTON, Mich. - Former NHRA Division 3 Top Alcohol Dragster Champ Jeff Wilson showed he is back to his championship form by turning in a dominating performance in winning this past weekend's Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex in Stanton, Mich. Wilson qualified No. 1, and ran low elapsed time of every round.
Wilson, from Winfield, Mo., qualified his Associated Builders & Contractors/Starcon blown alcohol dragster No. 1 with a track-record 5.516 second pass at 251.88 mph. In the first round, Wilson took out Tim Rudy with a 5.634 at 252.88 mph, and then took out Dave Hirata with a 5.719 at 247.04 mph. Wilson then received a bye run in the final when his opponent Ken Perry could not make the call.
"We hit on something in Columbus, and it seems to be working," said Wilson. "The motor is real happy, and our Spitzer chassis is working good. The struggles we were having in the first of the year are starting to pay off now. Since this Spitzer chassis is tunable, it really helped us get down the track. I really think that's why you see some of the times we were turning; they were pretty good compared to everyone else."
The next race for the ABC/Starcon team will be the resumption of the rained out Joliet, Ill., Division 3 LODRS event, Jul. 19-21. There Wilson hopes to be able to apply the same tune-up that brought them victory in Stanton.
"We are really hoping that we can apply what we have learned the last two races," stated Wilson. "Hopefully the hot weather will play into our hands. It seems the combination we have right now likes the hot weather, so we'll build on that."
