SCHUMACHER SECURES THIRD STARTING SPOT
MADISON, Ill., May 2 - For the seventh straight race, U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher will start from the top half of the field in Sunday's O'Reilly Midwest Nationals here at Gateway International Raceway.
Schumacher's last session pass of 3.885-seconds at 302.75 mph placed him third in the race day order behind Morgan Lucas and his Don Schumacher Racing teammate, Cory McClenathan, respectively.
The Chicago-area resident will meet 14th-place qualifier, Todd Simpson, in the first round of eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. CT. Simpson will be making his fifth career NHRA start, while Schumacher will be competing in his 275th race.
"Todd Simpson may not be a name a lot of people recognize, but I'll guarantee you he'll be ready to get after it come tomorrow," said Schumacher. "We're going to be prepared for whatever he throws at us."
After watching both qualifying runs on Friday get washed away due to rain, Schumacher returned to GIR on Saturday and promptly recorded two solid 1,000-foot trips. In the first round of qualifying, he stopped the clock at 3.896-seconds.
"We were spinning the tires pretty good in that first run, but we managed to calm her down for round two," he offered. "I like the way my U.S. Army dragster is running."
Schumacher, who will be looking to claim his third victory of the season, currently leads Antron Brown by 39 points in the Top Fuel standings.
"We're in a tight battle at the moment, so there's no room for mistakes," he said. "As usual, we'll go out there on Sunday and lay it all on the line. We're all about winning another race for our Soldiers."
