SMOKE 'EM IF YA GOT 'EM... WILK TO RACE FROM 11th SPOT
Tim Wilkerson made incremental progress on both of his Saturday runs, taking his Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang further down the track with each effort, but he never did put a smoke-free lap on the board here at Gateway International, and will race from the No. 11 spot on Sunday. His opening-round opponent will be Paul Lee.
"Either this was a pretty tricky track or we checked our brains at the desk when we got here," Wilkerson said. "It usually doesn't take us three runs to figure it out, but the truth of the deal is that we ran three qualifying sessions here and no two were alike in terms of the conditions. We went from dark and windy on Friday, to overcast on the first run today, and then to a bright sun and a hot track on the last one. We made progress each time, getting it further and further down there, but we couldn't keep it hooked up on any of them. I guess if we're going to finally make a good solid full lap, we might as well do it in the first round.
"It was a huge day for us here today, with hundreds and hundreds of LRS guests joining us. It's always great to have Dick Levi in the house, and it's neat when he brings Tim Davlin, the mayor of Springfield, with him like he did today. We didn't give them a great lap to cheer about, so I guess we'll just have to go out there and try to win some rounds tomorrow. We owe them that much."
