Dave Grubnic leads Team Kalitta qualifying in St. Louis
MADISON, Ill., (May 5, 2007) -- At the O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Int'l Raceway in Madison, Ill., just across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis, native Australian Dave Grubnic, driver of the black and blue, 8,000-horsepower Zantrex-3 Top Fuel dragster, with lead the four-car Kalitta Motorsports nitro assault when final eliminations begin Sunday. Qualifying for eliminations was cut from four laps to two after moisture on the race track canceled both of Friday's qualifying sessions.
Grubnic guided his quarter-mile rail to a best time trial of 4.620 seconds at 326.71 mph to take the No. 5 qualifying spot in the 16-car Top Fuel eliminations field. He will race No. 12 qualifier Scott Palmer (4.697 sec., 308.57 mph) when he rolls to the starting line for first round tomorrow.
Grubnic's Top Fuel teammate Doug Kalitta, driver of the bright red Mac Tools dragster, will begin eliminations from the No. 15 (4.751 sec., 301.00 mph) slot on the qualifying ladder. His race day will begin tomorrow against No. 2 qualifier Bob Vandergriff Jr., 4.610 sec., 321.19 mph.
Doug's Cousin Scott Kalitta, driver of the new-look yellow and red DHL Toyota Solara Nitro Funny Car, qualified No. 9 for the fuel flopper field with a best preliminary effort of 4.894 sec., at 315.12 mph. He will contend against No. 8 qualifier Gary Scelzi, 4.891 sec., 314.02 mph, in the opening stanza of Funny Car final eliminations.
Hillary Will, driver of the Kalitta Motorsports-managed, Ken Black-owned KB Racing LLC Top Fueler, qualified in the No. 13 position for eliminations.
