Maryland Driver Misses First Race of Season

ST. LOUIS, May 3, 2008 -- Justin Humphreys was bummed. The second-year Pro Stock driver had qualified for the first six NHRA POWERade Series races, but that string came to an end Saturday in the O'Reilly Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway.

Humphreys' RaceRedi Motorsports Pontiac GXP was ninth after Friday's first two attempts. But much cooler weather conditions Saturday improved conditions and elapsed times dropped. And then a mechanical problem prevented him from getting the track on either run, so his best time of 6.668 seconds from Friday wasn't quick enough.

"We had a carburetor tune-up issue on both runs," said Humphreys. "It was disappointing. We weren't able to adjust to the cooler conditions."

The driver from Monrovia, Md., was ninth in points going into the race and has been in the top 10 all season. "I hope we can stay there."

Humphreys is 10th with 286 points, 32 ahead of his nearest rival.

His next race is at Bristol, Tenn., May 16-18.
