HERBERT LOOKS TO MAKE HEADWAY FOR CHAMPIONSHIP AT GATEWAY
Madison, Ill. (May 2, 2007) -- Coming off their first final round appearance of the season, Doug Herbert and the Snap-on Tools team look to continue their winning ways at this weekends' NHRA Midwest Nationals in Madison, Ill.
The Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster ran strong and made it to the semifinal round at Gateway Int'l Raceway two years ago, but the track also brings back memories of the last time Herbert spoke to his friend and fellow Top Fuel racer, Darrell Russell, who lost his life as a result of a crash during eliminations in 2004.
"Darrell was the last person my son, James, and I talked to before we left the track in 2004," said Herbert. "I remember it like it was yesterday, and with the recent passing of Eric Medlen, we've been reminded again what a dangerous business nitro racing can be. But if it were slow and boring, I wouldn't love it like I do, and neither would anyone else. We would all be doing something else."
With thoughts of his friend in mind, Herbert will come into the race this weekend with a positive outlook.
"Our plan is to do more of what we did in Atlanta," said Herbert, "and that's win rounds and get some points. We want to be well into the top eight before the cutoff for the Countdown to the Championship, and we made good progress last weekend.
"We might have gotten a late start, but don't count us out. Things are coming around for the Snap-on Tools team, and we plan on being there when it counts."
