Del Worsham is currently sixth in the NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car point standings; he trails fifth place by 29 points and is 137 points out of first place. He was the No. 16 qualifier at Atlanta Dragway and lost to Ashley Force Hood in the first round of eliminations.
The Alan Johnson Al-Anabi Racing Funny Car was a consistent qualifier early this season. Through the first six races, Worsham's average qualifying position is 7.17. Throw out qualifying No. 16 at Las Vegas at Atlanta, and Worsham's average qualifying position is 2.5.
Last year at Gateway International Raceway, Worsham was the No. 8 qualifier; he defeated Bob Tasca before losing to Tim Wilkerson in the second round of eliminations. Worsham won the race at Gateway International Raceway in 2003.
Worsham prior to Gateway International Raceway:
"We are definitely not getting the results we want, and we all know how good this team can be when we find some solid consistency. I've been saying it for the last three races, and I hate to sound like a broken record, but we are still trying to get to the point where we can make solid runs on a regular basis. We didn't like our results at Atlanta, but we left there with some very positive signs.
"We got to the final round of qualifying, and we weren't in the race. We put down our best run of the weekend. It wasn't spectacular, but the 4.21 got us into the race. Then, in the first round of eliminations, we posted a 4.13-second pass. We didn't win, but we made two consecutive strong runs. If we had run 4.13 in qualifying, we would have been in the middle of the field instead of 16th, and things might have been different. But for now, we head to St. Louis with some positive thoughts, and the way the last two races have gone for us, that says a lot."
