CRUZ PEDREGON REACHES QUARTERFINALS IN ST. LOUIS
Madison, Ill. (May 6, 2007) -- Starting the final qualifying session at the NHRA POWERade Midwest Nationals May 4-6, 2007 from outside the top 16 NHRA Nitro Funny Car field is nothing short of pressure.More pressure was created after a steady midwest rain caused the cancellation of Friday's qualification rounds, thus leaving the teams only two qualifying runs on Saturday to make the final 16 car field for Sunday's final eliminations.
Cruz Pedregon, the owner/driver of the Advance Auto Parts Funny Car, is accustomed to this kind of pressure and proved it by making field on the final qualifying round pass on Saturday with a 4.969 at 314.02 mph to earn the No. 15 starting spot for final eliminations.
"We're optimistic; the team is really coming together and we are very close to finding that combination that will increase our consistency," said crew chief and veteran nitro tuner, Wayne Dupuy. "We just met a tough, tricky track this weekend.I'm looking forward to celebrating in the Winner's Circle- perhaps that celebration will come at Bristol."
Pedregon, looking to improve on his No. 10 position in the Countdown to the Championship, was ready to go rounds on Sunday. Facing Team Force's Robert Hight, Pedregon, in the right lane, nailed the tree with a .064 reaction time.
"Our first round elimination win over Robert Hight was big," stated Pedregon, known to his fans as, The Cruzer. "I had to pedal it once, then it hooked back up to the track and we got the win light. It was a good round win for our team who was looking forward to going rounds this weekend."
Pedregon then faced Ron Capps, the Countdown to the Championship points leader, in second round of eliminations. Off the line with a slight lead, Pedregon's Chevy Monte Carlo lost traction and Capps went on to the round win.
"We had a good weekend here in St. Louis," said Pedregon. "It's a top-eight finish which will keep us in the top ten in points. We are upbeat and ready to move on to Bristol. We are ready for a big win, I can feel it."
