BOB PANELLA JR. WINS ANOTHER ONE, FROM POLE TO WINNER'S CIRCLE
BOB PANELLA JR., PANELLA MOTORSPORTS CHEVY S-10, won his second Pro Stock Truck title of his career and the season in four final-round appearances, leading the way from No. 1 qualifying position into winner's circle. He dominated every round in eliminations, with his slowest e.t. a 7.663 in the first round, defeating points leader MARK OSBORNE, RCL COMPONENTS CHEVY S-10, in the final with his track record elapsed time of 7.623 seconds and track record top speed of 176.28 mph. Panella launched first with a .478 reaction time to Osborne's .579, but Osborne's Chevy S-10 quit at the starting line with a fuel overload problem. Following a three-and-a-half-hour rain delay, final eliminations were completed after 2 a.m.
Panella defeated Dave McConnell, John Coughlin and Tim Freeman to reach the final. Osborne dismissed Randy Daniels, Brad Jeter and Mike Coughlin en route to his matchup with Panella.
PANELLA: "I'm happy that all our hard work back at the shop has been paying off. We haven't plateaued, we're still going to try to get better and everyone else will be too. The guys and the transporter have been on the road since Gainesville. Fortunately now that we've won a couple of these things we can go home with a good taste in our mouth before Indy (U.S. Nationals)." DID YOU SEE THAT OSBORNE HAD A PROBLEM?: "Honestly, I probably shouldn't have done it, but in fifth gear I looked at Winston Vision and saw him way back there, so I knew something had happened to him and it was probably terminal. I didn't want to celebrate and do something stupid and forget to finish the run. I was happy, definitely happy. Tired, but happy. I wish it would have been a real race. At this point we are running strong, we have a little bit of an advantage, and we stayed in the good lane (left) or what we thought was the good lane all night long and that probably made the difference. I thank Chevrolet for all their support. I appreciate everything they have done for me. Hopefully we can continue that relationship in the years to come." ON RACING AT NIGHT: "I like it. I raced a ittle bit at night when I ran Comp. I didn't expect it to be this late, obviously. It makes for a long day, but I'll be home Sunday afternoon by 2 p.m.. I don't want to go home on Sunday all the time, I just don't want to be here four or more days. On a track like this running at night helps a lot. The track stays more consistent than when you have sunshine, then no sunshine. The temperature probably didn't change 5 degrees from the first round to the final. The humidity went up. That probably affects the driver and the engine a little bit. I'm happy for Chevrolet and all my guys who have helped us these last few races. I'm looking forward to going home and taking a break for a while." YOU MADE IT LOOK EASY: "We were fortunate enough to make a good run and be No. 1. That gave us a good baseline to what to do tonight. We tried to make four repeatable runs tonight and it kind of worked out for us."
OSBORNE: "Evidently there was a malfunction on the 2-step switch on the S-10. It's what keeps it from revving higher on the starting line. It evidently just loaded up on fuel when I let the clutch out and it made a big pop and the motor died, and Panella was off to the races. We are real glad we did good. We still have the points lead. I can't say enough about my crew, Tim Freeman, (Dr.) Phil Surface, Tommy Lee, Roy Teeter. They have been really awesome to me. And Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins. He stuck here with us all night. It's going on close to 4 a.m. here (at least in my time zone,the East Coast). He stayed right here with us to the last moment. I take my hat off to his engine shop and Grumpy himself.
