ANTRON BROWN RACES TO ROUND TWO AT ST. LOUIS

MADISON, Ill. (April 30, 2010) - Antron Brown raced his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to a quarterfinal finish Sunday afternoon at Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis. After seven of 23 races on the 2010 NHRA schedule, the 24-time NHRA ranks fifth in the Top Fuel standings.

A day after qualifying in the No. 16 position for the first time in his Top Fuel career (4.688-seconds), Brown bested No. 1 qualifier and DSR teammate Cory McClenathan before the Matco/Army rail lost traction against perennial title contender Doug Kalitta in the second round.

Racing out of the bottom of the 16-car order, Brown used a jump out of the starting gate to score the upset wire-to-wire win. After an uncharacteristically poor showing in qualifying, the Matco Tools/U.S. Army car again lost traction, but it was enough to get Brown the trip to the second round. The Matco-backed rail posted a winning lap of 4.510 at 245.99, while the 33-time Top Fuel winner's orange FRAM car lost traction early and slowed to a pass of 5.357 at 158.19. Brown is now 9-3 in his career against McClenathan.

Squaring off against Kalitta for the 10th time in his career, Brown used the better reaction time to race to the early lead before the bright blue Matco-backed rail lost traction and slowed to a pass of 4.157 at 256.75. Kalitta sped to the second quickest pass of the round at 3.932 at 294.50 to advance to the semifinals. Brown is now 6-4 against Kalitta and 11-7 in 18 rounds this season. He has 98 career Top Fuel round wins.

"This was a tough weekend for our DSR Matco Tools team," Brown said. "We struggled from the get go, which is really uncharacteristic for our team. We just seemed to miss it all weekend and that's really surprising because our Matco/Army car has been running so great. We figured out some gremlins with the new car and I'm confident we'll bounce back strong at Atlanta in a few weeks."

The next NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event is the 30th annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals, May 14-16, at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga. Brown won the Atlanta race in 2008 for his second career Top Fuel win. Last year at the Atlanta race, Brown qualified fifth and fell in round two to Tony Schumacher.
