What -- A -- Day at National Trail Raceway

HEBRON, Ohio -- The excitement, speed, and perfect weather continued on throughout Saturday at National Trail Raceway with over 500 racers battling it out at the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals. The SPORTSnationals series concentrates its attention on the Sportsman ranks, while maintaining the importance and thrills of a National event. Saturday's event included class eliminations in Stock and Super Stock which featured the popular Mopar Hemi Challenge and the JEGS Top Dragster Showdown.

Charlie Westcott Sr., of Parma, Mich., took home the winner-take-all $5,000 purse at the Mopar Hemi Challenge here at National Trail. It was another family battle as Wescott piloted his '68 Barracuda into the winner's circle over his son Charlie Jr., with an exciting but unexpected holeshot win of his son. Many were surprised to see Westcott Jr.'s impressive winning streak come to an end. Sr. ran his Hemi-powered vehicle down the track at 8.566 seconds, 157.04 mph. to beat Jr.'s quicker 8.520 seconds, 155.58 mph. run. David Hakim, Manager of Chrysler's Marketing and Strategy Department said, "It's amazing how the Westcott family has raised the bar with the amount of performance they can extract from these cars and still be able to keep it within the NHRA regulations."

In other exciting action, James Monroe out of Bloomington, Ind., won top honors in the JEGS Top Dragster Shootout. Monroe was unqualified for the shootout coming into this weekend's action, but he made the best of his alternate appearance and took top honors. He piloted his dragster down the track at 7.054 seconds, 187.18 mph. to defeat Marysville, Ohio, resident Jeffrey Brown.

In final qualifying action, Jason Coan, Greentown, Ind., was able to hold onto the Comp Eliminator top qualifying position with his 8.266 second pass. Lee Sharp, Maryville, Tenn., lead the Super Stock class with his qualifying pass of 8.518 seconds and Bert Morgan of Charleston, Ill., lead the Stock Eliminator class running his '75 Buick Wagon to the No. 1 spot. The Top Sportsman class was a sight to see as the majority of the field was running sub 7.000 second passes. In fact, just to be in the show on Sunday, a run of 7.04 or faster would be necessary. With all this being said, Keith Raftery of Lake Charles, La., was in a league of his own when he piloted his '07 GTO to an impressive 6.490 second run at a top speed of 213.94 mph.. Xenia, Ohio, resident Tom Swigart clinched the pole position in the Top Dragster class reaching a top speed of 212.63 mph.

The action continues tomorrow with final eliminations beginning at 8 a.m. Top Dragster Round 1 begins at 11 a.m., Top Sportsman is set for 11:30 a.m., and Comp Eliminator will begin at noon.

Sunday's general admission tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children (8-12). For more information please contact National Trail Raceway, (740) 928-5708 or www.nationaltrailraceway.com.
