SPENCER MASSEY SWIPES FOURTH STARTING SPOT IN TOPEKA
TOPEKA, Kan. – Spencer Massey, driving the FRAM Top Fuel dragster, secured the fourth starting position here Saturday during final qualifying for the 23rd annual NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.
Massey used his best Friday pass – 3.829-seconds at 321.65 mph – to set up a confrontation with 13th-place qualifier, Luigi Novelli, in the first round of eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. CDT.
“After being number one last weekend (at Atlanta Dragway), we wanted to do it again here in Topeka,” said the Fort Worth native and resident. “But, I was happy with the way the car ran just the same. We made four clean passes and went from A to B without any issues. We’re looking to get four more of those tomorrow.”
Massey, who is seeking his first win driving for Don Schumacher Racing, sees no issue with the fact his teammates, Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown, are on the same side of the ladder.
“It was going to happen at some point I guess,” he said. “There’s really not much you can do about it. Needless to say, we want to make sure a DSR dragster gets to the finals with a chance to win the race.”
Last year in Topeka, the FRAM dragster, with Cory McClenathan behind the wheel, advanced to the finals before losing to Schumacher and the U.S. Army team.
“And, it’s our goal this year to get it to victory lane,” said Massey. “We’d like to give the FRAM folks a bunch of wins this year.”
