MASSEY TAKES FRAM/PRESTONE DRAGSTER TO SECOND STARTING SPOT IN HOUSTON
BAYTOWN, TEXAS, April 30, 2011 – Spencer Massey, behind the wheel of his FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel dragster, swiped the second starting position here Saturday during final qualifying for Sunday’s 24th annual NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway.
Massey’s Friday pass – 3.838-seconds at 319.45 mph – was good enough to fall in just behind his Don Schumacher Racing teammate, Tony Schumacher, in the final race day order.
The Fort Worth native/resident will line up alongside 15th-place qualifier, Steve Torrence, in the first round of final eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. CDT.
“I was happy with our qualifying performance,” said Massey, who came into the weekend fifth in the standings. “I was particularly happy with what we did in that last round. While a lot of cars struggled to get down the track, we went from A to B without any issues.”
With the humidity level rising as the day wore on, Massey still managed a 3.892-second run at 316.60 mph in the final qualifying session, which was the quickest of the round.
“I believe we have a good car going into race day,” he said. “I’m really excited about tomorrow. We came close to getting a win in Charlotte a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully, we can close the deal here in Baytown.”
A win in Baytown would also mean a win coming in his home state, which is something Massey really wants.
“I have a lot of family and friends down here rooting us on,” he offered. “It would be pretty cool if we could all get together late tomorrow afternoon for a victory celebration.”
