Spencer Massey Charges To Third Starting Spot At NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals
Showing continued consistency, FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel dragster driver Spencer Massey took the third starting spot here Saturday during final qualifying for the 11th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.
Massey today posted two more flawless runs and as a result set up a confrontation with 14th-place-qualifier Pat Dakin in Sunday’s first round of final eliminations beginning at noon ET.
“I’m looking forward to my first Bristol Dragway race,” said the Fort Worth native and resident. “I didn’t qualify the last time I was here (in 2009). Not only am I in the show this time around with Don Schumacher Racing, but I have a great opportunity to win the race. You can’t ask for anything more than that.”
Massey, winner of the last two races on the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule, has directed the FRAM/Prestone dragster to 27 straight clean laps dating back to the first qualifying round in early May at Atlanta Dragway. He will be looking to bank four more of those laps Sunday.
“We just have to go out there and do what we’ve been doing – go A to B down the track,” he offered. “I have to continue to do my job because Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara (his co-crew chiefs) and the rest of the team are doing their jobs perfectly.
“It has been a great weekend already. Now, I want to put to an exclamation point on the deal and have a great Sunday.”
Massey, who is second in the points, knows he cannot look beyond the first round of competition or otherwise he might be packing up a lot earlier than expected.
“We can’t take Pat Dakin lightly or anyone for that matter who qualifies in this Top Fuel field,” he said. “Anyone can win a round and the race. If you take a team for granted, you can get into deep trouble.”
