Spencer Massey Places Fram/Prestone Dragster In Second Spot For NHRA Supernationals
– Handling the controls of the FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel dragster, Spencer Massey nailed the second starting position here Saturday during final qualifying for Sunday’s 42nd annual NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
Massey’s 3.795-second run at 323.81 miles per hour from Friday night remained good enough to fall in behind pole sitter Del Worsham in the race day order.
Coming off his first victory of the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season two weeks ago in Topeka, Massey will take on 15th-place qualifier, Bob Vandergriff, Jr., in the first round of final eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. ET. He beat Vandergriff in the finals at Heartland Park Topeka.
“We will run our own race regardless of who is in the next lane,” said the Fort Worth native and resident. “But, it is pretty cool that we’re replaying the finals from Topeka.”
On Saturday, Massey posted two more clean passes, while challenging for the quickest elapsed time in the final session – his Don Schumacher Racing teammate, Tony Schumacher, edged him out on speed to grab the three qualifying bonus points (both ran 3.802-second laps).
“We continue to run well,” said Massey. “You have to give credit to all of the guys on the FRAM/Prestone team – I really have one great race car. We’ve gone the last 19 rounds (going back to the first qualifying run at Atlanta Dragway) without smoking the tires. That’s pretty impressive if you ask me.
“Of course, we want four more A-to-B runs tomorrow to go along with four win lights. I’m looking forward to getting started.”
Massey arrived in the Garden State holding fourth in the standings, eight points behind Schumacher in second.
“It’s really tight,” he said. “The competition is just unbelievable in Top Fuel right now. You can never let your guard down against anyone.”
