SONOMA, Calif. (July 31, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. posted two consistent passes during qualifying Saturday at Infineon Raceway en route to claiming the No. 13 qualifying spot at the Bruton Smith-owned track.

On Saturday's first qualifying effort, Johnson powered his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to a performance of 5.010 seconds at 297.22 mph, before using a Mike Green tune-up to power to a pass of 5.045 at 289.88 on his final qualifying attempt of the weekend. The five-time NHRA winner grabbed the No. 13 spot with a run of 4.990 at 304.12 on his second qualifying pass.

"When the sun came out on Saturday and the track conditions got a little trickier, we were able to adapt," Johnson said. "If we can take what we learned on those two runs and pick it up just a bit, we'll be a tough car on Sunday. We went down the track twice and we've got some good information to learn from."

Johnson will battle No. 4 qualifier Cruz Pedregon in the first round of Funny Car eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday. Johnson has a 6-1 career mark against Pedregon.
