Capps Suffers Narrow Defeat at Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 1, 2004) -- Despite recording his best run of the weekend, 14-time NHRA winner Ron Capps and the green Skoal RacingSM crew were defeated in round one Sunday at Infineon Raceway.

Capps, who won at Infineon Raceway in 1998, faced Whit Bazemore in round one for the second consecutive event. Capps and Bazemore posted similar reaction times and in one of the closest races in the Funny Car category, Bazemore narrowly edged Capps at the finish line. Bazemore recorded a pass of 4.871 seconds at 314.17 mph, while Capps' Roland Leong-tuned Chevy flopper clocked a performance of 4.881 at 313.37. Even with the first round loss, Capps moved up one spot in the POWERade points chase and now sits 13th in the Funny Car standings.

"It's unfortunate that we got (Whit) Bazemore in the first round," Capps said. "We should have run better during qualifying on Friday night. Obviously we're upset that we lost, but it's hard to be upset when you're making so much progress. Roland (Leong) and the Skoal guys did a great job of stepping up when the conditions changed. It's bittersweet. You hate to lose, but I'm happy with the way the car is running."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 23rd annual Lucas Oil Nationals, Aug. 12-15, at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn. Capps is a two-time winner of the Brainerd race (1998, '01).
