SONOMA, Calif. (July 13) -- Although he does plan to relax leading up to this weekend's 24th annual Fram-Autolite NHRA Nationals, Top Fuel driver Morgan Lucas has several events planned in the days leading up to the event.
First for the driver of the GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster is golfing at the legendary Olympic Club, site of the 2012 U.S. Open Championship, and the week goes on from there.
"We're going golfing Tuesday then wine tasting on Wednesday with the great folks from Toyota," Lucas said. "Thursday we're just going to enjoy the California sun and relax and that night we have the Eric Medlen Charity Dinner, which is awesome."
Lucas said it's always a treat to chill out and to race in his native state.
"California is awesome and it's fun to come visit," Lucas said. "Sonoma is one of the few places where I'd come back to stay for good. I love it here."
Lucas is holding steady in eighth place in the Top Fuel standings and has won at least one round in three of the last four races.
"It's an even-numbered year, so hopefully that will be good luck for me," Lucas said. "I won in Sonoma in 2002, '04, and '06 in my Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Dragster so I'm on this every-other-year streak.
"It's a big race. It's crazy, a great market for us, and the stands are always full."
He said he's also looking forward to racing in Sonoma because it was the home track of the late Eric Medlen, a driver and close friend of Lucas.
"It's the Eric Medlen race," said Lucas, who raises money for Medlen's charitable foundation. "That's what I call it, because Eric's home was right around that area. It'll be nice to take one home on the 'Ice Cream Day' for him."
