Morgan exits in second round in Sonoma; changes on the way

SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 1, 2004) - Larry Morgan dispensed of Bruce Allen in the first round of the Fram-Autolite Nationals today with a 6.733-second elapsed time at 205.04 mph to Allen's 6.742/204.39, but his 6.764/204.23 in the second round was no match for Dave Connolly's 6.743/205.57. Following that loss, Morgan said he'll make some changes to his Team Mopar Dodge Stratus.

Morgan had moved into fourth by one point in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Pro Stock point standings after qualifying No. 3, but is now back in fifth place.

"We just didn't make a very good run," said the Newark, Ohio, resident. "It shook the tires in low gear a little bit. I lost a little bit there.

"We're sure trying, we're close," he said of his quest to compete squarely in performance with points leader Greg Anderson. "We need to pick up a little power and we'll be good. This car of mine is just is giving us fits right now. We'll get it figured out, though.

"We're getting a new front end for the next race. Hopefully we're going to fix what's wrong with the rear end of it. We've got an idea of what's wrong, but we couldn't fix it out here (during the three-race, back-to-back Western Swing), but we will have it fixed before Brainerd."

Next up is the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minn., Aug. 13-15, 2004.
