DIXON RACES TO NO. 3 SPOT FRIDAY AT INFINEON RACEWAY
SONOMA, Calif. (July 29, 2005) -- Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon set a track speed record en route to the provisional No. 3 qualifying position Friday at Infineon Raceway after blasting his Miller Lite dragster to a performance of 4.550 seconds at 326.71 mph.
The 37-time NHRA winner opened qualifying at the Bruton Smith-owned race track when he used a Dick LaHaie tune-up to record a run of 4.599 at 316.15 to place the Miller Lite rail in the No. 2 position following the first of four scheduled qualifying attempts.
Friday night, in the cool California conditions that dipped into the 50s, Dixon blistered the Infineon Raceway quarter mile in 4.550 at 326.71 to position the Miller Lite/Ameriquest dragster in the provisional No. 3 spot with two qualifying sessions remaining. Dixon's 326.71-mph speed set the Infineon Raceway track speed record.
"We made a good pass on our first run," Dixon said. "That gave us a baseline and allowed us to tune it up for Friday night. Friday night, we made a good run for the conditions that we had. That run moved us from seventh to third in the order and that will definitely help us as things play out for race day. It was an important run."
Dixon looks to grab his fourth No. 1 qualifying position of the season when Top Fuel qualifying continues with sessions scheduled for noon and 3:30 p.m. (PT). Dixon qualified in the top spot at the Sonoma race in 2002.
