Jeg Coughlin's Chevy Cavalier No. 1 After First Day At Sears Point
SONOMA, Calif., August 3, 2001 -Qualifying for the 14th annual Fram-Autolite NHRA Nationals got underway today at Sears Point Raceway. Defending Winston champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. drove his yellow and black Chevy Cavalier to the top of the Pro Stock ladder, ending day one at Sears Point in the No. 1 qualifying position.
Coughlin's Jeg's Mail Order Chevy set a track-record elapsed time of 6.880 seconds at 199.14 mph during the second session of time trials. He's looking for his first pole in 2001.
"The left lane is typically the best of the two here at Sears Point," said Coughlin. "As the draw would have it we had the good lane for tonight's session. The track came around during the round and we were able to drive our Chevy Cavalier to the No. 1 spot and the track-record. We were real happy with how the car ran and the effort from the team. We've had some emotional highs and lows here lately, so we're looking to take today's experience and put our program back on the winning track.
"Were we surprised? We were pretty excited I can tell you that much. We always feel like we have it in us, that's for sure. Our team has pulled together during the last couple of weeks, and we've been struggling with little mistakes on the starting line and in the pits. We'll just try to capitalize on the effort, start building towards raceday and see if we can't continue to run at the front of the pack."
Warren Johnson is qualified in the No. 2 position in a Grand Am, Kurt Johnson's ACDelco Chevy Cavalier is third, Bruce Allen is fourth in a Grand Am and Mark Osborne is fifth. Mike Edwards is qualified seventh, Vieri Gaines is eighth, Ron Krisher is 17th and Troy Coughlin is 19th, all in Chevy Cavaliers.
In Funny Car, Tommy Johnson Jr. is qualified fifth in a Camaro with a 5.016 second run at 303.57 mph. Whit Bazemore leads the field after day one in a Firebird, Dean Skuza is qualified second, John Force is third and Bruce Sarver is fourth. Jim Epler is 14th, Chuck Etchells is 16th and Ron Capps is 17th.
