Points leader Arana looking for a couple of Sonoma 'firsts'
SONOMA, Calif. (July 14) -- Reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle champion and current Full Throttle points leader Hector Arana plans to accomplish two goals this weekend during the 24th annual Fram-Autolite NHRA Nationals -- win his first trophy at Infineon Raceway and take home his first national event victory of the 2010 season.
"My sons told me it's time to win and I agree with them 100 percent," Arana said. "We've taken this Lucas Oil Buell to four finals this year but haven't closed the deal yet. It's time to get past that and win.
"I love this track. It's a beautiful place and the conditions can be super fast, which is really good for us. I've never won here so I can get my first Sonoma win and my first win of the year at the same time. That's the plan."
After eight Pro Stock Motorcycle races, Arana has built a commanding 120-point lead over the second-place rider in the category, a number that translates to six full rounds of competition. He's eight rounds up on third place, nine ahead of fourth, and 11 up on fifth.
"We're happy with everything that's happened so far," Arana said. "If we keep racing like this we will be in great shape when the Countdown starts. Getting a win or two or three before then would be wonderful.
"I have a good tune-up for fast tracks and this one is at sea level so it can be really good. I think that helps us. We've gone over the engines top to bottom since the last race and we're ready to go."
