CONNOLLY, FOUR OTHERS WIN ON GOODYEAR TIRES AT SONOMA
SONOMA, Calif. (July 28, 2008) -- Dave Connolly beat his teammate in the final round and moved into the top 10 of the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock standings as he won the Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway. In all, Goodyear won five categories, equaling the production of all other participating tiremakers.
The other Goodyear-equipped winners included Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car), Jim Whiteley (Top Alcohol Dragster) and Robert Naber (Super Gas).
Connolly's win was his second victory of the 2008 campaign. He beat Jeg Coughlin in the final.
"It was one of those days I felt like we were going to do real good and we did," Connolly said.
Greg Anderson, the Pro Stock points leader, lost to Coughlin in the third round but still leads the category with 1,106 points. Jason Line is second with 1,000 tallies.
Schumacher's win gave him a sweep of the three western swing races. He won for the eighth time in 2008 and has clinched the top seeded position in the NHRA's championship playoffs. He has 49 career wins and is three short of Joe Amato's Top Fuel record of 52 wins.
"We've got a lot of races left to win," Schumacher said.
He beat Hillary Will in the final round.
"We know we've got to go down the track and we know we've got the faster car," Schumacher said. "I think people lose track of the pressure that puts on the driver."
Hight's win was his second of the season. He beat Gary Densham in the final round. The win moved Hight to the second spot in the Funny Car standings. Hight's teammate, Ashley Force, earned the first top qualifying position of her career.
Whiteley's win was his third in national competition. Naber's win was his second.
