Kalitta set to start another Sonoma streak.
Sonoma, Calif., July 31, 2002 - As a Top Fuel rookie in 1998, Doug Kalitta received the prestigious Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award and won the highly coveted Budweiser Shootout title. He also started a streak of dominance rarely seen in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. Doug took his dragster to the winner's circle at Sonoma for the first of three consecutive years.
Kalitta and the Mac Tools/Kalitta Motorsports dragster team have set their sights on starting another string of victories on the newly renovated Infineon Raceway (formerly Sears Point Raceway) drag strip at the Fram-Autolite Nationals, Aug. 2-4.
As the finish of the demanding Western Swing and the uncertainty of a new racing surface looms, Kalitta knows that Sonoma will provide a challenging arena for all the Top Fuel competitors.
"Three races in three weekends is tough," said Kalitta. "It is tough on crews, drivers and equipment. Our Mac Tools team has never backed down from a challenge, and we are not about to start now. We shook the tires on Sunday in Seattle last weekend and left without a win we knew we could have. Our Mac Tools dragster team just keeps getting stronger though."
"Sonoma is the heart of California wine country and a beautiful place to race. There is also a tremendous amount of Mac Tools distributors in the area. They deserve to see the Mac Tools dragster perform well there."
Co-crew chief Jim Oberhofer said, "All of our notes for Sonoma will change. It is a totally different facility with new characteristics that will test everyone."
"Connie (Kalitta, crew chief) and I noticed something in Seattle, and we have some new ideas for the Mac Tools dragster tune-up that we are going to use in Sonoma. We never stop trying to get the best out of our race car, even on an unfamiliar track surface."
Team Kalitta always strives to give their best on and off of the track, even when a national television audience intently watches them perform their individual race-day duties.
An overwhelming positive response in Columbus has prompted ESPN, Kalitta Motorsports and Mac Tools to again interact with race fans through use of an exclusive pit camera in Sonoma. The "pit cam" will be mounted just above the Mac Tools dragster crew to offer the ESPN2 television audience a unique point of view into the complexity and delicate balance of maintaining a 6500+ horsepower engine.
Kalitta Motorsports Marketing Manager, Bob Lawson said, "We are very excited to have the pit cam back in action this weekend. It will give drag racing fans a new perspective. It also offers the television analysts a new avenue to illustrate how a professional pit crew works in harmony to get a Top Fuel rocket like the Mac Tools dragster ready for competition on the track."
After 14 of 23 National Events, Doug is 6th in NHRA POWERade Top Fuel Championship points.
Website updates begin on Friday, August, 2. Please check the news and photo sections on www.kalittaracing.com to keep track of the Mac Tools/Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster team.
