Herbert ready to repeat victory in Sonoma
SONOMA, Calif. (July 29, 2005) --During the last session of qualifying Doug Herbert ran his fastest run of the weekend. All of that data will go toward making the Snap-on Tools car the dragster to beat on Sunday. Herbert qualified in the No. 5 position Saturday for the 18th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway. His 4.562-second pass at 314.75 mph posted Friday was the quickest pass he made, but Saturday's runs in the heat weren't too bad either. Herbert went 4.605 at 320.66 -- the second quickest of the session -- during the last qualifying session.
"That was exactly what we wanted to do and exactly what we need to do," Herbert said. "Turning in that kind of performance in the heat today is going to really help us during eliminations tomorrow. We're going to be a tough car tomorrow and I'm looking forward to racing." Herbert earned the Top Fuel victory here in 2002 and is anxious to be the last man standing on Sunday. Final elimination start at 11 a.m. "Knowing that we've won here before is always good because it just gives you confidence when you pull up to the starting line," Herbert said. "Every day we get a little better and more importantly, a little more consistent." Herbert will face rookie Ben Marshall in the first round. It will be the first time the two races will meet up in eliminations. "I think we are really getting a handle on the car and it makes Sunday more exciting," Herbert said. "We're ready and we're just going to get better as we go."
ESPN2 will air coverage of this weekend's event. Final eliminations can be seen on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.
