Taylor looking for breakout event in Sonoma.
SONOMA, Calif. - 'Resolute' would be an appropriate word to describe NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Dennis Taylor. The seasoned veteran has had a year he would soon like to forget, and would be enough to make any less of a racer throw in the towel. Taylor refuses to let the low points of this year get him and his Cooner Wire backed team down, and feels that success is just around the corner at this weekend's Fram-Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
Taylor, who runs his racing safety equipment company, Taylor Motorsports Products, in Anaheim, Calif., hopes the addition of fellow veteran racer Randy Goodwin to his team will help the team get back going in the right direction this weekend.
"Our last race here at Sonoma, it really looked like things were starting to come around," said Taylor. "Even though we haven't had the year we have wanted so far, we're not quitters; we're not giving up. Randy and Pete [Swayne] decided to park their car, so Randy will be going with us the rest of the year to give us some added assistance in the tuning department. We know we have the car and the team to run with the top of the class, we just have to keep at it until we get back to that level."
"This weekend also means a lot to me because one of my partners Jerry Crawford just had a heart attack," added Taylor. "They had to do open heart surgery on him, and they have just released him from the hospital. He won't be able to go with us for a while, so I would like to go out there and win this race for him."
Qualifying begins on Friday with two sessions for the alcohol cars, followed by one final qualifying session and round one of eliminations Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
