SONOMA, Calif. (July 29, 2005) -- Qualifying got underway today for the 18th annual NHRA FRAM Autolite Nationals, the ninth of 15 races for Pro Stock Motorcycles on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
At the end of today's two qualifying sessions, Chip Ellis, aboard the G Squared S&S Buell, sits No. 7.
In the first session, Ellis covered the Infineon Raceway quarter-mile in 7.131 seconds. While in the second session a starting line procedure miscue preventing Ellis from making a full run under power. With two qualifying runs remaining tomorrow, he will try to improve on his earlier run this afternoon.
This is the first time that George Bryce, partner and co-owner of G Squared Motorsports along with George Smith, has tuned an S&S-powered V-Twin at the Sonoma track, as the team did not race here last year.
"This is the first time with the Buell at Sonoma as we were regrouping from the additional weight that NHRA added to the V-Twins beginning at the 2004 St. Louis race and missed four events, including Sonoma," said Bryce. "Everything is changed from the last time we ran here. We have a different motorcycle and different driver."
"Today, we made the adjustments from the high altitude in Denver to sea level here at Sonoma. Although we inadvertently left a safety pin in the shifter in that second session, I still feel we developed a good base that will allow us to make a move on the top qualified bikes tomorrow."
"One thing I can tell you is that the motorcycle class is very popular at Infineon Raceway. If you look around the parking facilities you will see thousands and thousands of motorcycles at the event. We have a big fan base here and we look forward to seeing how quick and fast our S&S-powered Buell can run in front of our fans in the final two qualifying sessions."
QUALIFYING: Qualifying concludes for Ellis and the G Squared/S&S Buell with two additional sessions on Saturday, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Ellis begins his quest for the Pro Stock Motorcycle title on Sunday with eliminations for all classes getting underway at 11 a.m. All times are local Sonoma time -- Pacific Time (PT): 3 hours behind the Eastern Time zone -- and subject to change at anytime.
