BROWN EARNS THIRD POLE OF THE SEASON, LEADS FIELD AT INFINEON
SONOMA, Calif. (July 26, 2008) -- Antron Brown earned his third pole of the season Saturday afternoon at Infineon Raceway. The driver of the Matco Tools dragster paced the field at the 21st annual FRAM-Autolite Nationals with a lap of 3.805-seconds.
After racing to the provisional pole on Friday evening at Infineon Raceway with a blistering run of 3.805 seconds at 316.45 mph in the Matco Tools dragster, Brown, as did most Top Fuel drivers, struggled on Saturday's first qualifying attempt. The bright blue Matco-backed rail overpowered the track and slowed to a run of 4.769 at 156.30. The former Pro Stock Motorcycle standout remained first in the order. On his final qualifying attempt of the weekend, the first-year Top Fuel racer posted the second quickest run of the round. Brown used a tune-up from crew chief Lee Beard to clock a performance of 3.948 at 303.03. It is Brown's third pole of the season in Top Fuel and 14th of his career. He has 23 rounds wins this season, the second most in Top Fuel competition.
"My guys did an awesome job this weekend," Brown said. "I can't say enough about Lee Beard and my entire Matco Tools crew. This was an awesome race to do well at. We had so much support from all our Matco distributors in the area. We just want to keep going strong on race day and hopefully get our third Wally to go along with this third No. 1 qualifier this year."
Brown will face off against No. 16 qualifier Steve Chrisman in the opening round of eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday at Infineon Raceway. Brown is a two-time PSM finalist at the Sonoma NHRA race. Teammate Rod Fuller qualified seventh in the Caterpillar dragster.
